چکیده
Welcome to the first issue of the Journal of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (JPIDS). This new journal, the official journal of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS), will be dedicated to publishing manuscripts on perinatal, childhood, and adolescent infectious diseases. JPIDS will be a high-quality source of original research articles, clinical trial reports, guidelines, and topical reviews on topics ranging from bench to bedside, with particular attention to the interests and needs of the pediatric infectious diseases community. Our goal is that JPIDS represent the spectrum of scientific and clinical work engaging pediatric infectious diseases physicians and scientists today, as well as areas of future growth in the field. JPIDS will be published quarterly, in online and print formats, by Oxford University Press (OUP), the same publisher as used by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), and as such will have an informal relationship with The Journal of Infectious Diseases (JID) and Clinical Infectious Diseases (CID), a partnership that positions JPIDS toward becoming a lead journal among our peer publications. All members of PIDS will receive complimentary online and print subscriptions to JPIDS as part of their membership. Additionally, institutional subscribers may purchase JPIDS with the IDSA journals, CID and JID, which are also published by OUP. JPIDS joins more than 250 journal titles published by OUP, which, as a department of the University of Oxford, traces its publishing origins back to 1586 and the earliest days of printing. Today OUP is the world’s largest university press and is at the forefront of publishing technology. Authors and readers can look forward to an expeditious online and print publication, a robust journal website with features and tools to assist in article discovery, and a commitment to outstanding service. We recognize that PIDS as a society owes a great deal to the editors of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, George McCracken and John Nelson, and gratefully acknowledge their tremendous contributions made to PIDS over many years. The decision to launch the new journal was made to ensure the long-term stability and maturation of PIDS. In this inaugural issue, we present articles that span from bench to bedside and cover a broad range of topics relevant to pediatric infectious diseases including vaccines, parasitic infections, bacterial infections, viral infections and healthcare-acquired infections. We present a timely major review article on the epidemiology of infant meningococcal disease. In addition, from the IDSA Annual Meeting, we present the pediatric infectious disease literature review and cases from the Pediatric Fellows’ Day Workshop. Finally, we introduce the Pediatric ID Consultant, a feature focused on common questions and issues related to the everyday practice of pediatric infectious diseases. But before moving forward to the excellent scientific and clinical content contained in this first issue, we present a special article on the history of PIDS coauthored by 2 of the founders and legends in our field, Stanley Plotkin and Caroline Breese Hall. The Editorial Board of JPIDS includes many national and international leaders in the field of pediatric infectious diseases. On a personal note, I am honored, humbled, and thrilled to serve as the first Editor-in-Chief of this new journal and invite you to join me in making JPIDS an invaluable and excellent resource for our field. Along with the editorial board and Editor’s Note
